Gustave Moreau - Peintures
Gustave Moreau (Paris, 6 avril 1826 – 18 avril 1898) – peintre, dessinateur et graveur français du symbolisme.
Gustave Moreau est fils d´architecte. Dès l´âge de 6 ans, il se passionne pour le dessin, et son père l´encourage dans cette voie. A partir de 1840, il reçoit des cours à domicile. En 1841 il se rend pour la première fois en Italie avec sa mère. Son admiration va principalement aux maîtres de la Renaissance. De 1846 à 1849, il étudie à l´Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Il rencontre Théodore Chassériau au Louvre où il se rend pour exécuter des copies. Il commence à exposer au Salon de Paris en 1852, et y présente des œuvres jusqu´en 1880. Il privilégie les sujets religieux et les thèmes inspirés de la mythologie antique. En 1864, son tableau « Œdipe et le Sphinx » lui vaut un grand succès. Dans les dernières années de sa vie, il enseigne à l´Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris. C´est un grand connaisseur de l´Antiquité mais également de la Renaissance. L´influence des grands maîtres italiens est nettement reconnaissable dans son œuvre, mais il réinterprète leurs sujets d´une manière toute personnelle. Ses tableaux sont quasi surchargés d´éléments décoratifs très travaillés (« Galatée », « Jupiter et Sémélé »), il y introduit aussi des motifs exotiques et orientaux (« Salomé »). Il s´attache moins à décrire des événements qu´à rendre des émotions et des états d´âme. Le rêve et l´imagination jouent un grand rôle dans ses tableaux : le spectateur doit avoir l´impression qu´ils sont surgis d´un rêve. C´est ce qui rend ses oeuvres si fascinantes pour les surréalistes qui s´en inspireront largement.
