George Romney - Peintures
George Romney (Dalton-in-Furness, 26 décembre 1734 – Kendal, 15 novembre 1802) – peintre portraitiste anglais du classicisme. George Romney commence son apprentissage auprès du peintre portraitiste Christopher Steele. En 1762 il s´installe à Londres. A peine un an plus tard, il reçoit une première distinction pour son tableau « La mort du général Wolfe ». De 1773 à 1775 il séjourne en Italie pour étudier les œuvres de Michel Ange et Raphaël. De retour en Angleterre il ouvre son propre atelier à Londres et connaît un grand succès comme portraitiste. Il représente ses modèles sous des traits idéalisés, dans des costumes recherchés et sur un arrière-plan très travaillé. Il travaille vite, non seulement au pinceau mais en ayant recours aussi au crayon et à la plume, ce qui est assez inhabituel à son époque. Il est connu surtout pour ses portraits de Emma Hart, la future Lady Hamilton, qu´il rencontre alors qu´elle n´a encore que 17 ans. Il réalise environ 40 portraits d´elle sans compter divers dessins. Son œuvre comporte environ 2000 tableaux et plus de 5000 dessins, pour la plupart exposés à Londres et à Cambridge, mais également au musée du Louvre à Paris et aussi aux Etats-Unis.
