Das Werk von Eugene Boudin besteht größtenteils aus stimmungsvollen Meer- und Strandansichten unter einem in verschiedenen Grautönen changierenden Himmel. Von seinen Zeitgenossen Gustave Courbet und Jean-Francois Millet, zu denen er durch Ausstellungen in seinem Papiergeschäft freundschaftliche Beziehungen aufbaut, wird ihm ein besonderes Gespür für die Gestaltung von Licht und melancholischen Stimmungen zugeschrieben. Die Gemälde von Eugene Boudin werden in den Salons für ihre Genauigkeit und frische Farbigkeit geschätzt.
