Wilhelm Morgner - Paintings
Wilhelm Morgner
was a German artist of Expressionism, whose works were published in the almanac “Blauer Reiter” (Blue Rider).
Born: 27 January 1891 in Soest, Germany
Died: 16 August 1917 near Langemark, Flanders (First World War)
After a brief artistic training with the painter Georg Tappert in Worpswede, Wilhelm Morgner develops a very own formal style, spends his life relatively constant in his birthplace of Soest. Through his inclusion in the almanac “Blauer Reiter” in 1912, he becomes acquainted with Expressionism used by his fellow German painter colleagues, as well as with the French Fauvism and the Orphism of Robert and Sonia Delaunay. The coloring of Morgners brightens considerably, as he begins to depict his impersonalized motifs in line-shaped color areas. In his works, which are structured in a picture-parallel way, the stylistic features typical of Expressionism dominate: complementary contrasts, lack of perspective and emphasis on area and line. Convoked to the front repeatedly, Wilhelm Morgner captured many experiences of the First World War until his death in 1917.
