Vincent Willem van Gogh, who painted his monumental work within five years, is considered the greatest Dutch painter of the 19th century and was an important pioneer of modern art.
Born on March 30, 1853 in Groot-Zundert near Breda.
Died on July 29, 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise near Paris.
In December 1885, after searching his salvation and profession in a number of activities (also as a priest), Vincent van Gogh started to paint, hoping to make his deep emotional conflicts bearable in doing so. His first pictures, mostly studies of peasants (including the painting "The Potato Eaters"), are marked by a desperate realism and kept in a dark color. Only after discovering Japanese woodcuts and his acquaintance with some Impressionists, Van Gogh's color scheme brightened noticeably. He found to his own style in Arles, where he lived from February 20, 1888 onwards. His pictures, which appeared dramatic due to their colors and rhythms, reflect his inmost soul life: with a powerful ductus, Van Gogh set the contrasting contours and filled them with pure local colors. After a stay in hospital for mental illness, van Gogh moved to Doctor Gachet in Auvers, where he shot himself in the chest on July 27, 1890. |
