Robert Henri - Paintings

Robert Henri was an American painter of landscapes, genre images and portraits. He devoted himself extensively to European art and is regarded as the most important founding member of the Ashcan School of New York.

Died: 12 August 1929 in New York City, New York
Due to his father’s work in the real-estate business, Robert Henri travels a lot already in his youth. At the age of 21, in addition to the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, he attends the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His studies extend to the year 1890. But in addition to that, Henri is also artistically active in Europe and resides in Spain and Italy for some time. After his return to New York, Robert Henri founds the Ashcan School together with eight other fellow painters whose philosophy is to show the true character of the city of New York. They are the pioneers of American Realism in painting. In his portraits, Robert Henri prefers to paint life-size character depictions, which are often held in dark colors and convince by emphasizing their life-like expression. With this art, the painter is very successful, and he is often awarded medals in the USA, and also his school is flourishing: many well-known painters attend it and get lastingly influenced by Henri.
