Peder Severin (P.S.) Krøyer was a well-known Danish sculptor, graphic artist and painter working in the style of Impressionism.

Peder Severin Krøyer, who adopts the name of his uncle and adoptive father, is a prodigy from an artistic point of view, since already at the age of 13, he is allowed to study at the Copenhagen Academy. Already three years after leaving the academy, in 1873, he is awarded the small Gold Medal. During a stay in Paris, he becomes acquainted with Naturalism when paying a visit to Léon Bonnat. Subsequently he studies Diego Velázquez in Spain and travels to Italy in 1880. The following year he settles down in Denmark. Peder Severin Krøyer is the first Danish painter who paints in the open air, especially in Skagen. There, he also acquires a house for spending the summer months. He is known for his special lighting design, which is his constant source for new experiments. So, he combines daylight with electric light, paints sunrises and sunsets, moonlight and twilight. Already during his lifetime, he is an internationally renowned artist and the most important member of the Skagen Artists' Association. | |
