Joseph Mallord William Turner was an important English painter of the 19th century who, due to his sentimental landscapes, is counted towards the romantic painting style.

William Turner who, already as a child, is a highly talented painter, receives very early painterly trainings. He gets known by the public for his moody landscape depictions, which are stylistically inspired by his teacher Philippe Jacques de Loutherbourg. Fascinated by the landscape paintings by Claude Lorrain, William Turner begins to paint idealized cityscapes of London. In addition to numerous river views, often in watercolor, he also produces numerous paintings with alpine formations after a trip to Switzerland. After 1820, Turner's style changes. He produces compositions that are focused upon color interplay. Because of his almost abstract painting, which seeks to capture the mood of the moment via the color, he is a pioneer of Impressionism.
