Jean Antoine Watteau - Paintings

Jean Antoine Watteau became one of the most important French painters of Rococo, due to his elegant genre pictures.
Born: 10 October 1684 in Valenciennes
Died: 18 July 1721 in Nogent-sur-Marne
Although Jean Antoine Watteau already receives painting lessons as a child, and is subsequently taught by wide range of painters, including Claude Gillot, he is granted a place at the Paris Academy only in 1712. Through the acquaintance with his patron Pierre Crozat, he succeeds in creating contact with the upscale society, whose vitality he can reproduce so well in his gallant paintings. His probably most important work of this genre, which is specifically named after him, is “The Embarkation to Kythera”. Watteau describes the longing for the paradise, which can be reached with the ship enchanted by angels.
