Giovanni Francesco Guercino
(whose real name was Giovanni Francesco Barbieri) was an important Italian painter and draftsman of the Baroque.
Baptized on February 08, 1591 in Cento.
Died on December 22, 1666 in Bologna.
During his lifetime, Giovanni Francesco Guercino experienced a remarkable artistic development. In contrast to his early work, which stands out by the soft nuances of light and shadow, his work experienced an increasing dramatization of light and a strong darkening of the color, influenced by images Ludovico Carracci and Palma il Vecchio. In 1621, the painter was called to Rome by Pope Gregory XV. There, Giovanni Francesco Guercino received new impetus and subsequently devoted himself to a more linear style of painting.
