Franz von Defregger - Paintings

Franz von Defregger was a pupil of Carl Theodor von Piloty. With his genre depictions, he became one of the most important Austrian painters.
Born: 30 April 1835 in Stronach, Tyrol, Austrian Empire
Died: 02 January 1921 in Munich
At the age of 25, Franz von Defregger starts a training as a carver and refines his talent as a painter by a study at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts and a stay in Paris. With his second attempt, he succeeds in being accepted as a pupil at the studio of Carl Theodor von Piloty. Here, he lays the foundations for his genre depictions. These make him famous internationally as they are featured in popular newspapers. Like his teacher Piloty, also Franz von Defregger becomes a sort of painter-prince, whose pompous villa in Munich becomes a visiting point for various artists. From 1878 to 1910, he maintains the leadership of the historical painting class as a professor at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. During these years, he wins numerous titles and awards, including the Bavarian Crown Order, which helps him obtain the German noble title “von”.
