Diego Velazquez - Paintings
Diego Velázquez
, was a significant Spanish painter of Baroque whose work received new appreciation by Impressionists.
Baptized: 06 June 1599 in Seville
Died: 06 August 1660 in Madrid
The artistic talent of Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (his name in full) is already discovered at an early stage. Due to this fact, the 21-year-old artist is already able to open his own workshop after two trainings. After being appointed to the Spanish royal court, Diego Velázquez is fortunate enough to ascent to aristocracy by the year 1660. Based on the works of Titian and Tintoretto, which he gets acquainted with during his first journey to Italy, he increasingly produces portraits at the Spanish court, as well as some paintings with mythological and religious content. Velázquez’s fame is based on his portraits where he achieves an optimal combination of representation and haunting individuality of the depicted persons. Through masterpieces such as “Las Meninas” or “La fábula de Aracné”, it becomes clear how much psychological and intellectual delicacy the artist must have possessed in addition to his painterly abilities.
