Thomas Cole, gebürtiger Engländer, gilt als beliebter Maler von Panoramalandschaften der Romantik in Amerika.
geboren am 1. Februar 1801 in Bolton le Moors, England
gestorben am 11. Februar 1848 in Catskill, New York
Thomas Cole lässt sich sowohl in Europa als auch in Amerika zum Künstler ausbilden. Beeinflusst von den Werken von Joseph Mallord William Turner, Nicolas Poussin und Claude Lorrain beginnt er sich auf die Darstellung in friedlicher Schönheit versunkener Panoramalandschaften festzulegen. 1825 gründet er in New York die Hudson River School, die sich zur Aufgabe macht literarische Inhalte in die heroisierende Darstellung der Landschaften Neuenglands mit einzubeziehen. In seinem Spätwerk erscheinen die sonst so friedlichen Landschaftsbilder von Thomas Cole mystisch aufgeladener. 		Thomas Cole
