William Hogarth - Paintings

William Hogarth, who became known by his anti-academic book of art theory called "The Analysis of Beauty", is regarded as a major English painter and printmaker of the Baroque.
Born on November 10, 1697 in London.
Died on October 26, 1764 in London.
William Hogarth, who advocated an English painting scene that was independent from continental Europe throughout his life, became especially known for his morally educational, satirical series of pictures and engravings alongside with a few traditional history paintings of religious nature. His satirical picture stories, in which he expressed criticism against the dominant political and cultural situation in his country and the traditional ideal of beauty, were modeled in their compositions taking the theater as an example. In doing so, his most famous series of paintings "The Life Story of a Libertine" deals with a man ending in a lunatic asylum. William Hogarth was also a pioneer of the English portrait art: In his portraits based on Franz Hals and Jean Simeon Chardin, he found his way towards a new realism.
