John Singer Sargent was one of the most important American portrait painter of the beginning Modernity.

Despite his American background, John Singer Sargent, is mainly based in Europe. He enjoys an education in Rome with Carl Welsch, in Paris with Carolus Duran and in the meantime, he attends the Academy in Florence. Molded by Impressionism as well as by the painters Frans Hals and Diego Velázquez, whose works he studied on two journeys in the years around 1880, John Singer Sargent develops his own style. In 1884, the artist, now a sought-after portrait painter of the American bourgeoisie and English nobility, takes over the studio of James Abbot McNeill Whistler in London. Sargent's portraits, like his famous work “Carnation, Lily, Lily Rose” testify to his taste for decorative elements.
