Jean Louis Theodore Gericault - Paintings
Théodore Géricault
(full name: Jean-Louis-André-Théodore), an idol for Eugene Delacroix, was one of the most important French painters of the Romantic period.
Born on September 26, 1791 in Rouen.
Died on January 26, 1824 in Paris.
Théodore Géricault's work was created during four creative periods, in which he mostly suffered from severe depression, living in Paris. Among his favorite topics, there are paintings with military content, pictures of horses and recent, mostly dramatic events. Thus, "The Raft of Medusa", showing survivors of a shipwreck, can be named his major work. Géricault's figures appear rather as classical sculptures, illuminated by a dramatic lighting, but they stand out by their passionate expression of feelings, reproduced with great realism.
