Hans Makart, after whose style, a certain kind of fashion and art industry has been named, is considered an important Austrian painter, designer, illustrator and theater painter of the Wilhelminian time.
Born on May 28, 1840 in Salzburg.
Died on October 13, 1884 in Vienna.
Hans Makart, who already painted his first portrait the age of 15 in the style of the Nazarene, studied both, at the Vienna Academy and with Josef Schiffmann in Munich. He also attended the course of the history painter Karl Theodor von Piloty, who lead him into this genre. Hans Makart painted neo-Baroque-style crowd scenes. He did so also in the triptych "The Plague in Florence", where the action is staged in the foreground by the use of artificial light. The background is only hinted at. In addition to his activities as a recognized painter and printmaker, Hans Makart also fitted pageants like the one in 1879 held in the honor of the silver wedding procession of the Austrian imperial couple. |
