Giovanni Segantini, whose full name was Giovanni Battista Emanuele Maria Segantini, was a painter of Realism and Symbolism from the Austrian Empire who later resided in Italy.
Born: 15 January 1858 in Arco, Trentino, Austrian Empire
Died: 28 September 1899 on the Schafberg near Pontresina, Switzerland
Via detours, Giovanni Segantini, whose family is very poor, is given the opportunity to get trained in Milan at Accademia di Brera. His painterly talent and his individual, pointillist manner for the depiction of light conditions is quickly recognized. It becomes evident above all in his landscape paintings. Via his friend, Vittore Grubicy de Dragon, who is an art dealer, Segantini also gets in contact with various recognized fellow artist colleagues and their styles. His emphasis on Symbolism is, above all, visible in four paintings depicting women in trees, such as “The Wicked Mothers” and “Fruit of Love”.
