Eduard Gaertner, was a German decorative painter for china of the 19th century. He also produced panoramic views and realistic architectural drawings.
Born: 02 June 1801 in Berlin
Died: 22 February 1877 in Flecken Zechlin
Eduard Gaertner receives drawing lessons already as a ten-year-old. After a six-year apprenticeship at the Royal Porcelain Factory in Berlin as a china and decorative painter, in addition to working in this factory, he works for Carl Wilhelm Gropius. With his support, Eduard Gaertner receives first orders from the Royal family. It is here where he begins to produce architectural paintings for the first time. Through several educational journeys in the 1920s, he learns how to paint landscapes as well as how to design panoramic views, for which he finds a new client with the Russian czarina. Interestingly, Czarina Alexandra acquires a panorama view of Berlin, while the Prussian king buys a view of the Kremlin by Eduard Gaertner. From the year 1840 onwards, he undertakes several journeys and thematically moves on to the painting of bridges and cityscapes, which even today continue to be convincing by the almost romantic appearance of their lighting design.
