Michelangelo Buonarroti - Paintings
Michelangelo Buonarroti
was, along with Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael, the most important painter, poet, sculptor and architect of the Italian High Renaissance.
Born on March 06, 1475 in Casentino / Caprese.
Died on February 18, 1564 in Rome.
Michelangelo, who was considered a universal genius, began his apprenticeship with the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio, then attended art school in Giardino Mediceo of San Marco and in 1490, he attracted the attention of the Medici in Florence, who, besides Pope Julius II and Paul III, was among his main clients. In his early creative period, Michelangelo travelled between Rome and Florence back and forth. In the years 1501 to 1504, he produced sculptures like the "Pietà" and "David" as well as "The Bruges Madonna" and the tondo "The Holy Family", which plays a key role for the subsequent Mannerist art. About Michelangelo's style, one can say that he only picked up ideas from other artists and incorporated them into his style. So, the only existing panel picture of his called "The Holy Family" (also known as Madonna Doni) was a rival picture to Da Vinci's "St. Anne of Trinity". In 1505, Michelangelo was appointed for the job to picture the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. This fresco and the painting of the altar wall with the "Last Judgment" were keeping the artist busy up until the year 1541. They are regarded as unsurpassed masterpieces of art history. In addition, Michelangelo was also active as an architect: he designed the Cappella Medici in Florence and was entrusted with the supervision of construction of the St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican in 1546. He was busy with the design of the Dome until his death. The inner life of this human being, who was extremely talented in all areas of art, is reflected by his poems and by the strong expression of his three Pietà sculptures.
