Hans Baldung (alias “Grien”) was a South German painter, copper engraver and graphic artist. Together with Albrecht Dürer and Albrecht Altdorfer he is rated among the great masters of the old German Rococo painting scene.
Born: 1484/1485 in the Free Imperial City of Schwäbisch Gmünd
Died: 1545 in the Free Imperial City of Strasbourg
After staying four years at Albrecht Dürer’s workshop, Hans Baldung starts his own works from 1507 onwards, mostly dealing with altarpieces and portraits with both, mythological and allegorical content. In strong colorfulness with a high degree of movement and a partial abysmal drama, sensuous nude drawings are created which, through their almost expressive power, already show signs of Mannerism.
