Correggio (eigentlich Antonio Allegri genannt), Meister des Illusionismus, ist einer der bedeutendsten italienischen Künstler der Renaissance.

Das Werk von Correggio setzt sich aus teils religiösen teils mythologischen Zyklen und Tafelbildern zusammen. In seinem Frühwerk zeigt sich in der noch festen Linie und der Drapierung der Gewänder der Einfluss von Andrea Mantegna. Aber in den stimmungsvollen Landschaftsdarstellungen kommt schon da der meisterhafte Stil Correggios zum Tragen. Sein Spätwerk weist Einflüsse von Raffael, Leonardo da Vinci und Michelangelo auf. Correggio wird durch seinen stimmungsvollen und weichen Umgang mit Licht und Farbe und für die durch Verkürzungen erzeugte räumliche Tiefenillusion zum Vorreiter des barocken Illusionismus.
