Léon Augustin Lhermitte - Paintings

Léon Augustin Lhermitte was a significant French landscape painter of Naturalism, who participated in the founding of the artist association Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.

Died: 27 July 1925 in Paris
The painter Léon Augustin Lhermitte attends the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he is taught by painter Horace Lecoq de Boisbaudran. This teacher, who also teaches Rodin and other famous painters, also applies his unusual method of teaching to Lhermitte to help his pupils towards their own style. The twenty-year-old Lhermitte has his first success at the Paris Salon with a charcoal drawing. Further honors follow, the painter is commander of the honorary legion and receives twice the Grand Prize at the World Exposition in Paris. His work speaks for itself and is much valued by his fellow colleagues like Vincent van Gogh. He tries to depict the working peasants and agricultural workers with an expressive, sometimes also drastic naturalism. His paintings are reminiscent of the French artist Jean-François Millet, who is known for his depictions of monumental figures in front of rural scenery. Both artists’ works can be seen in the major museums of Europe.
